A man was arrested in connection with the theft of bronze fists belonging to the tombstone of the Black Consciousness Movement leader, Steve Biko.
According to a report by Eastern Cape newspaper Daily Dispatch, the suspect allegedly vandalised the gravestone which was unveiled in 2017 by removing the mounted bronze fists and later selling it at a local scrap yard for R190.
The 31-year-old suspect is said to have appeared at the Qonce (King Williamtown) magistrates court on Monday.
In a media release, police spokesperson captain Mluleki Mbi said the following:
“A case of theft and violation of a grave has been opened after the vandalism and theft from the grave at Ginsberg, Qonce on Friday. The information led the police to arrest a 31-year-old man and recover the stolen items.”

Following the incident, the Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) shared their concerns on the matter.
“Azapo is puzzled that the government is not maintaining and providing security to such important precincts. The questions we ask are: Could it be that the pivotal role played by Biko and sacrifices made to the people of Azania with his life, is insignificant to them?”
Meanwhile, local news publication Citizen have revealed that Azapo has now called on the Buffalo City Municipality Metro to fence the precinct and provide security.
Members of the public have criticised scrapyards for their role in encouraging damage to our country’s infrastructure.
“Some scrapyards are just up to no good. Look at how many traffic lights are missing in parts of JHB. Nyaope boys sell anything for a quick buck,” wrote one user.
Another added: “Scrap yards need to be closed, or closely regulated, this will cut infrastructure damage by 80%.”
