‘The last 24 hours have been alot’ – public backlash on AKA book

by Sergio Miller

Melinda Ferguson, the author of the highly controversial book Love Kills: The tragic tale of AKA and Anele, says that the last few days have been quite difficult since revealing her plans to release a book which focuses on the toxic relationship of the deceased love couple.

Taking to her Facebook page she wrote:

“I’m not going to lie here…the last 24 hours have been a lot. While I knew that the book would probably cause a stir, I did not expect the crazy responses that it has received since someone broke the news on social media yesterday.

“While I have been touched by the love and support I received, I have also felt deeply affected and misunderstood by the spitting vitriol. I know we live in a world of social media, where unkindness and callousness drive the conversation, but it’s a lot.”

With the Forbes and Tembe family both distancing themselves from the upcoming book, describing the timing of it as being distasteful and opportunistic, Melinda provided more clarity on why she attempted delving into the publicised romance in the first place.

“I wrote this book in an attempt to try and understand a story about two people who fell down a rabbit hole of toxic love. Something kept driving me to keep on in search of some kind of truth around what happened. And why they were now both dead…”

She further added: “I have been through my own kind of hell in my life as an addict and as someone who has embarked on dangerous and obsessive relationships. Their story spoke to me. It literally broke my heart.”

Furthermore, Melinda who is well known for writing several other books that include Inside the Belly of the Beast: The Real Bosasa and Oscar: An Accident Waiting to Happen, did an interview with The Citizen and added:

“As a journalist, it is not my job to get the blessing of the families but rather to tell the story as truthfully as possible. I wasn’t relying on getting anyone’s blessing when writing the book.”

In response to the remarks made by the Forbes family she further added that although she feels sorry for their loss, she will ultimately go ahead with selling the book.

“I stand by my book and believe this story needs to be told. I did the work. I interviewed people from both sides.”
