Former SABC COO and African Content Movement political party founder Hlaudi Motsoeneng recently visited Kaya959 studios and spoke of matters about the country’s salary wage among other things.
The vocal SABC boss did not hold back when it came to what South Africans deserve as a minimum wage, speaking to former Generations actor and now radio presenter Phemelo Motene, Hlaudi shared that those he used to lead at SABC were well paid for their services in all departments.
Asked by the presenter if he has worked out what a living wage in South Africa would be if he won the elections, Hlaudi responded:
” I don’t want people to go to mashonisa (loan sharks) if they are working. I mean, it will be a living wage. I’m not talking of millions but everyone will get a living wage. Me and the people of South Africa, you’ll know how much you want for someone to live at home, and look after children. For example, you can’t pay people R10 000 a month, even a cleaner or a gardener.”
Asked what the proposed rate would be for a cleaner. Hlaudi responded saying a cleaner would get R15 000.
He also added, “Remember these people are professionals, you know, South Africa, we make a mistake that professionals are those people who are doctors, everyone in his sphere is a professional.”
Phemelo noted that the people he was talking about would mostly be working at people’s homes, referring to the hospitality industry that fails to comply with the minimum wage regulations, she asked how would he make sure there was compliance on this minimum wage he was proposing.
Hlaudi responded, “If I am the president, it is going to happen. There are issues I don’t negotiate. If I see these things are not assisting our people, I don’t negotiate. Go and ask SABC, they’ll tell you, I don’t negotiate.”
Amused by the former COO, the presenter proceeded to ask what the punishment would be given to those who don’t comply with the regulation, prompting Hlaudi to respond:
“Get rid of them, if it is a private sector we’ll make sure that it’s a crime if you don’t follow the regulations of the country.”
Hlaudi Motsoeneng: “You can’t pay people R10,000 a month, that is me. Even a cleaner, or a gardener. ?
A cleaner will get R15,000… I don’t negotiate, go & ask SABC they’ll tell you,” ??
