4 Ways to prevent chapped lips this winter

It might still be autumn, but winter’s dryness is already here. While the colder weather is great for our fashion choices (hello knee-high boots and coats) it’s not great for our skin, or lips for that matter. As someone who has chapped lips almost every day of the year, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve for you.


Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Drinking plenty of water is essential for overall health, but it’s a game-changer for lips too. Think of your lips like little balloons – stay hydrated and they stay plump! Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day. And stick to those 8 cups of water a day – trust me.

Moisturise with lip balm

The right lip balm will change your life more than an extra bottle of water. Not all lip balms are created equal, though. Toss out those with harsh chemicals and fake flavours. Instead, opt for brands that have natural ingredients like shea butter, beeswax, or coconut oil.

Oh, and of course some SPF! Your lips need protection from the sun, too. Apply liberally throughout the day, especially before heading outdoors and before bed for a night of deep moisture repair.

Exfoliate

Just like your face, your lips can benefit from gentle exfoliation. Whip up a DIY sugar scrub with a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of brown sugar. Massage gently in circular motions, then rinse with warm water and follow up with a thick layer of lip balm.

Stop licking your lips

Licking lips is a bad habit that needs breaking. While it can provide some short-term relief from dry lips, licking your lips actually removes moisture, making things worse. With enough water and moisturiser, you shouldn’t feel the need to lick your chapped lips.

Bonus Tips:
Sometimes, even with the best care, lips get chapped. For a quick fix, try applying a cold compress for a few minutes to reduce inflammation.

Or, in seriously bad situations, I find that the best repair balm is actually Vicks – it soothes sore, chapped lips and the Teatree oil moisturises well. This is not a long-term solution but for a night-time mask? It might just the be thing that saves your lips.
