‘Today I got my brand new Hilux 2024, 5pm and 8pm it was stolen’ shares internet user

A Johannesburg internet user shared a traumatic incident that occurred after she got her brand new Toyota Hilux from the dealership around 5 pm only to have it stolen by 8 pm.

Anyone who has bought a car knows how exciting the feeling is. To have it taken away from you just three hours after you got it is not only painful, but it can cause emotional scars that may take some time to heal.

Sadly, the crime rate in the country does not seem to be subsiding as the statistics show a rise in carjackings every year.

In June 2023, Business Tech reported that 5,119 cars were hijacked as reported by the South African Police Service (SAPS) over January, February, and March 2023. This statistic means that around 57 cars were hijacked daily in the country.

Gauteng has kept its number one spot as the most carjacked city in the country with over 2000 cars hijacked almost every year.

Chrizel Du Plessis’s post was shared by MDN News on their social media platform. The news hub shared a screen-grabbed post by the victim, captioned:

“One of the saddest days in my life, today I got my brand new Hilux 2024, 5 pm and 8 pm it was stolen in Sandton.”

The post prompted a lot of feedback from many South Africans who commented:

Said story, hopefully the new minister of Police and minister of justice will do better because Bheki Cele is useless.

This will keep on happening until everyone recognize that socio-economic contributors to the risks associated with crime go far beyond the scope of the mandate of the SAPS, & includes a multiplicity of risk factors, which must be addressed collaboratively by all stakeholders.
