How journaling your thoughts can be beneficial

Whether you are experiencing mental health problems, had a big shift in your personal life, or coming to terms with the grief after suddenly losing a loved one, expressing how you feel has always been a positive way of finding closure and healing.

While many of us often choose not to let others in when it comes to sharing our business, another positive solution to helping you overcome some of your feelings is writing them down.

This does not necessarily need to happen in the event of a tragedy, you may even do it during your happiest moments.

Although many of us may have grown up having a journal, the more we aged, the amount of time we spent channelling our thoughts onto paper may have fallen by the wayside. As adult life becomes overwhelming, this should motivate us to reflect and go back to the things we did as children to have peace of mind.

In this article, we will explore some of the benefits of journaling to discover just how effective it can be.

Deepens self-awareness: According to lifestyle publication Day One, journaling is considered a form of self-reflection. It is during the writing process that we often discover things about ourselves that we may not have known or were oblivious to. This also helps you discover some of your core values and beliefs and helps with better decision-making.

Boosts health and well-being: According to health and wellness hub Healthline, a research study revealed that writing down your deepest thoughts contributes to lower blood pressure, improved mood, and overall well-being.

Creates separation from negative thoughts: The above-mentioned publication further adds that when going through an emotional catastrophe, it would be best to jot down how you feel. This allows you to reflect on your thoughts objectively.

“This distance is formally called cognitive diffusion. ‘The idea is that you are not your thoughts, emotions, or physical symptoms; instead, you are the context in which they occur,’” explains the reputable wellness publication.
