‘We have the co-ordinator who is basically the mastermind’- Bheki Cele on AKA case

by Sergio Miller

It’s been just over a year following the brutal killing of rapper AKA and his former manager Tabello Motsoane, and finally, the police have cracked the code in arresting those who were responsible for their murder.

This comes after the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) found two of the suspects in hiding in their country on Friday, the suspects are said to be brothers ages 28 and 29.

AKA, real name Kiernan and Tabello died as a result of the assassination on 10 February last year, shortly after exiting the Wish restaurant on Florida Road in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Following their murder the South African public and entertainment community alike expressed their frustration after a video emerged showing exactly what took place on that specific evening.

With clear evidence of what happened leaking onto the internet, many questioned why the Minister of Police Bheki Cele had not taken action to find the perpetrators.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Tuesday, Minister of Police Bheki Cele confirmed that six suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing.

“I am sure you have been making the call to say the person was in video [then] why has he not been arrested. The story is unlike evidence. What you see, people will still have to investigate. To you, there was one person to be arrested [but] six people have been arrested,” Cele said.

Further elaborating on the information received KwaZulu-Zulu Natal SAPS Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said that each of the suspects had a different role to play in the high profile killing.

“We have the coordinator who is basically the mastermind of the whole operation, he is in custody. And, we have two shooters that you also saw on social media. We have two spotters – one of the spotters was inside the restaurant observing Mr Forbes and his friends,”

According to the police, the killers had been following AKA since he arrived at the airport all the way to the hotel and restaurant. It is said that the plan might have been to shoot him while seated in the vehicle, however the plan was delayed when the rapper roamed around outside of the restaurant.

The suspects are expected to make their court appearance on Thursday 29th February.
