South Africans on Norwegian ship get a sigh of relief as Cholera scare becomes false alarm

South Africans travelling in the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship can finally breathe a sigh of relief. This follows a recent scare that led authorities to believe that occupants were infected with cholera.

The Norwegian ship recently docked in Cape Town and several other popular attraction spots to give its travellers a world-class experience, however as it approached the Island of Mauritius, at least 15 occupants fell ill, which caused authorities to believe that it could be due to cholera.

This is due to the recent outbreak that occurred in South Africa. While the Mauritian authorities initially blocked the ship from entering, tests later gave them the assurance that it was not cholera but that passengers had gastroenteritis.

According to the health publication Mayo Clinic, gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection that includes symptoms such as diarrhoea and stomach cramps.

Speaking about the experience to the news publication, The South African, an anonymous source told the publication that when they arrived in Mauritius on Sunday, they didn’t understand why they had not made the stop as initially planned, until it was later revealed that people have fallen ill and that there were concerns on an outbreak on board.

“It was frustrating as we had booked to continue our stay in Mauritius from Monday onwards, and we’ve lost two days at the resort, but thankfully most passengers have been healthy and well looked after.”

South Africa has reported 1,076 cholera cases and at least 47 deaths over the past two years, according to Africa Centres for Diseases Control and Prevention.
