Activist and the ex-girlfriend of TV personality Katlego Maboe, Monique Muller, has spoken out about the gender-based violence allegations centred around social media influencer Nadia Jaftha’s family.
Nadia’s brother, content creator Taariq Jaftha, has been embroiled in allegations of abuse and holding his wife Aleesha – formerly Danica Patience – under duress.
The question, “Where is Danica?” and the hashtag #FreeDanica has been making its rounds on social media after a video of Danica’s brother, Dale Patience, explaining the family’s situation was shared by the non-profit organisation Women For Change.
Dale explained that Danica had distanced herself from family and friends due to her relationship with Taariq. With the help of a friend she was still in contact with, Danica managed to run away with one of her five children but was later found by Taariq.
Danica’s family later contacted the police to assist them in finding her but received little to no help. They then approached Taariq’s mother, Nawal Jaftha, for assistance, who told the family, “Don’t worry about her, if I’m not worried about her then you have nothing to worry about.”
In the video shared by the NPO, Nawal was also seen making light of the situation on TikTok hours later and not answering TikTokers’ questions about Danica whereabouts.

After seeing the news surrounding the Jaftha family, Monique took to her Instagram Stories to share her thoughts.
In 2020, Monique and Katlego’s relationship made headlines after the award-winning TV presenter was accused of cheating and abuse.
“Yes, I’m going to give my five cents on this Danica story because it’s a little bit triggering,” shared Monique. “This week has just been another reminder of this world we live in and how people are blatantly choosing to be oblivious to something that is so obvious, simply because they idolise someone or their family members. It is absolutely ridiculous.”
Monique continued, “I feel for them [Danica’s family] and for the backlash they are getting. I feel for the fact that they still don’t have access to Danica. It is scary how there are people enabling that kind of behaviour and making excuses for it because they are a public figure.”
