The mental health benefits of decluttering your space

If you’re struggling with the challenges of life and finding that stress and anxiety are becoming overwhelming, there’s a proven way to overcome this while staying in the comfort of your own home. Studies have shown that decluttering your living space can be an effective solution. By removing all of the unnecessary items that make your surroundings appear to be untidy, you’ll not only see immediate physical results but also experience a mental boost.

Medical hub, Mather Hospital reported on a study that proved that clutter has a profound effect on our mood and self-esteem, with links between high cortisol (stress hormone) levels and high density of household objects.

When you declutter, you create a space that is visually pleasing and organised, which can help you feel more in control and calm. You’ll also be able to find things more easily and won’t have to waste time searching for lost items. Additionally, decluttering can help you let go of items that no longer serve you, which can be a liberating experience.

While the process of decluttering can seem daunting, it’s important to take it one step at a time. Start by setting small goals and tackling one area at a time. You can break it down into sections such as your bedroom, living room, kitchen, and so on. Take the time to sort through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or discard. Remember, the goal is to create a space that is functional, organised, and promotes a sense of calm.

According to the health and wellness publication Very Well Health shares that an added benefit is that it improves your focus.

Researchers have found that an uncluttered and organised work area can help you process information better. Try devoting a few minutes to organising your workspace to make it easier to concentrate and get your work done.

In conclusion, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of life, decluttering your living space can be a helpful solution. By creating a more organised and visually pleasing environment, you’ll feel more in control and calm, which can have a positive impact on your mental and emotional well-being.
