Glitz, glamour and style were evident at this year’s Zeitz MOCAA Gala as many in attendance, which were undoubtedly the rich and famous, gathered for an exclusive auction and dinner.
The Zeitz MOCAA (which stands for Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) Gala, which was hosted by renowned South African model and businesswoman, Jo-Ann Strauss served as an “extraordinary celebration of art” where artists’ work was auctioned to raise funds to support the museum’s curatorial and education programming.
The exclusive art auction was facilitated by Strauss & Co, and featured works generously donated by a stellar lineup of internationally recognised artists, including William Kentridge, Senzeni Marasela, Mary Evans, Zandile Tshabalala, Unathi Mkonto, Kemang Wa Lehulere, Abdoulaye Konaté, and Alfredo Jaar. Notably, South African artist Cinga Samson made a generous monetary donation in support of the work of the institution.
The overall Gala scenography and key design elements were inspired by renowned South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga – drawing from his rich artistic oeuvre and adding a layer of aesthetic depth to an event that promised to be an enchanting experience.
Among the guests were rapper and media personality Boity Thulo, media mogul Bonang Matheba and photographer Trevor Stuurman.
With the event starting at 17h30, the celebs arrived fashionably late to gather in the foyer of the museum before heading up to the sixth floor at 19h00 to start the dinner celebrations.
