How to host a soccer match day party

There’s nothing more fun than watching a game of sport with people who understand and enjoy it.

South Africans are known for their love of gatherings when watching big matches. These gatherings often take place at people’s homes, at game parks or even at local pubs.

As the country gets behind our soccer boys Bafana Bafana after beating Cape Verde 2-1 in the quarter-finals, some people may wish to host friends and family while watching the team get closer to being crowned the AFCON 2023 winners, a title they last won at their inaugural tournament in 1996.

If you would like to host friends, colleagues or family while watching an AFCON game and are not sure how to go about it, look no further as we share a few points on how to do so.

Create a theme – decorate the entertainment area in the colours of your team and make sure to inform your guests to wear the team’s t-shirt too, if they don’t have any, ask them to wear any t-shirt the same colour as the team in support of.

Prep your entertainment system – hosting a match day requires you to have entertainment in good condition. Depending on the number of people you’re hosting, the screen of your television matters. Space is also something you must consider shares European Soccer Camp, a camping program by former professional soccer players and experienced coaches. The information source advises to move furniture around if space is a problem.

Plan Ahead – when it comes to food, make sure you do everything in advance as that will save you time the day of the game, giving you enough time to enjoy with your guests. Suburban Simplicity, is an information hub that shares ideas for easy recipes, crafts, cleaning, and home tips, and the organisation advises to focus on “finger foods or casual dining.”

Chill your drinks – there is nothing more disappointing than a warm beverage. Be sure to put your drinks in a cooler or refrigerator ahead of time so that when your guests arrive they can enjoy them best. Living with Amanda a lifestyle blogger and owner of a home decor shop suggests to have alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available for guests,  as some may opt not to drink on the day.

Host a braai – a braai is a perfect idea when hosting people at home as it is engaging, easy and can be enjoyed with different sides such as garlic bread, pap (stiff porridge made with maize meal) or salads. Make sure to serve snacks before the braai.
