Mmusi Maimane throws shade at Nigeria ahead of AFCON semi’s

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON)  clash between the South African soccer team Bafana Bafana and fellow Africans, Cape Verde has certainly been one that gave Mzansi belief again. 

Among many sporting codes that exist in the country, Bafana has always been the team with the lowest success in terms of national achievements. The last time the team won the African Cup of Nations was in 1996 and have only been able to reach the semis in 2000. 

While many South Africans seemed to have lost hope throughout the last few years, Mzansi’s football team aimed to turn their narrative around in 2024 and have done so in excellent fashion, beating both a star-studded Moroccan team, as well as displaying resilience to beat Cape Verde in the weekend’s quarter-final clash. 

The victory was not only well received by the country but also renewed their hope in the team as they await their fate in the semifinals against Nigeria. 

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) in a series of posts, well-known politician and leader of the Build One South Africa (BOSA), proved that he backs his country one hundred percent by throwing shade at their next opponents. 

In one post he warned the “Super Eagles”, as they are referred to, that Bafana is coming for them, hinting that the team captain and star goalkeeper Ronwen Williams will deny them the opportunity to score. 

“Watch out Nigeria. We are coming to break your hearts according to the book of Williams 4:4.” 

Later he jokingly added more fuel to the topic saying that after South Africa beats Nigeria, no Nigerian should be allowed to make an amapiano song for at least the next 5 years. 

These comments could not have come at a better timing as the Mzansi’s singing sensation Tyla – best known for her amapiano hit Water – recently beat several Nigerians to win her first Grammy award. 

To sum up a successful weekend he concluded by writing: “We will pour water on all the Burna boys. We are the originals. #BafanaBafana.”
