SA takes top 8 spots on Sub-Saharan Africa university ranking

While South Africa has been dominating in the area of certain sports, another achievement of domination can be added to the list. The country has been listed in the top eight positions for this year’s ranking of universities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa (also known as Non-Mediterranean Africa) is the area and region of the continent that lies south of the Sahara.

The global ranking was executed by Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain, explains BusinessTech.

Webometrics has stressed that the ranking had nothing to do with the universities’ websites but rather with link analysis. Other core indicators the rankings are based on include visibility, transparency/openness and excellence.

Below are the top 10 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the first eight coming from South Africa.

1. University of Cape Town

Location: Cape Town, Western Cape

Global ranking: 256

2. University of the Witwatersrand

Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng

Global ranking: 396

3. Stellenbosch University

Location: Stellenbosch, Western Cape

Global ranking: 444

4. University of Pretoria

Location: Pretoria, Gauteng

Global ranking: 447

5. University of KwaZulu-Natal

Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

Global ranking: 600

6. University of Johannesburg

Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng

Global ranking: 616

7. University of South Africa

Location: Pretoria, Gauteng (education is also offered online)

Global ranking: 801

8. University of the Western Cape

Location: Cape Town, Western Cape

Global ranking: 934

The University of Nairobi located in Kenya takes the ninth position with a global ranking of 1034 while the University of Ghana situated in the capital city of Accra sits at number 10 with a global ranking of 1101.

South Africa’s University of the Free State, located in the country’s judicial capital of Bloemfontein, missed a spot in the top 10 with the eleventh position in Sub-Saharan Africa and the 1103rd position globally.
