Tkzee’s Shibobo a popular favourite after Bafana victory – Here is the history behind the song

by Sergio Miller

The South African National football team, Bafana Bafana has once again proven that they indeed possess the big match temperament, that could take them all the way to winning this year’s African Cup of Nation (AFCON) tournament.

The country once again brimmed with pride as the men in green and gold earned themselves a convincing win against a star-studded Moroccan team, who previously knocked Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal out of the 2022 World Cup.

The victory could not come at a better time, as mzansi has been dominating the international stage since 2023 by winning the Rugby World Cup, and more recently mixed martial arts fighter Dricus du Plessis winning the UFC middleweight World title.

While ever vibrant Sister Betina, was theme song for 2023, Bafana’s latest victory revived another all-time South African favourite – Shibobo.

Following the impressive victory, several celebs including Springbok captain Siya Kolisi played the hit song to celebrate the football boys.

Released ahead of the 1998 FIFA world cup, this song has proven to stand the test of time.

Sampled from another international favourite – The Final Countdown – the song was released by the Kwaito group TKZee and features one of the country’s most prominent footballers – Benni McCarthy.

Known for his silky skills on the field, Benni was able to make an impressive transition behind the mic by delivering a rap verse, with a popular line being “Die poppe gaan dans (The dolls will be dancing).”

Reports by news and entertainment publication IOL suggests that the song reached more than 100 000 sales within the first month making it the fastest selling single in the country.

Bafana will soon be facing Cape Verde in the quarterfinals on Saturday 3 February.
