Yesterday was an amazing day for music lovers in Cape Town as they gathered at the DHL stadium in Greenpoint for the first leg of the Calabash South African events.

In a sold-out show attended by 40 000 music lovers, including kids, each act got the crowd screaming and cheering while they performed.

Around 18h00, approximately 6,000 people had already reached the stadium, with more arriving gradually as time passed.

It was during this time that presenter Darren ‘Whackhead’ Simpson shared the return of this fun-filled event, expressing a desire to make it an annual event. The dates for the 2025 show will be communicated later.

The event is moving to Johannesburg’s FNB stadium on the February 3, 2024.

On the main stage, the first performer was the energetic South African band Sunset Sweats, getting the crowd to singing along their hits. After warming up the stage and getting the crowd in the right mood, American singer Ava Max followed. This was Ava’s first performance in mzansi and judging by the way she and the crowd enjoyed her perfomance, she might be back for more.

Next up was Italian music group Meduza, who on their third song experienced technical glitches that were quickly fixed. The show immediately continued, with the crowd getting more hyped up as the time went on.

Lloyiso, our very own R&B sensation who performed at David Beckam’s son’s wedding, performed as the fourth act receiving lots of love as he chanted songs such as Seasons and many more. Rock band Keane and singer Will Linley followed afterwards, with Will getting the crowd geared up for the main act Maroon 5.

Upon taking the stage, Maroon 5’s magic was immediately felt with the band’s lead singer Adam Levine impressed by the crowd who chanted their songs loudly. Announcing that it was their second perfomance in mzansi, with the first one in 2008, the band closed the show with a bang.
