‘This year has been a rollercoaster’ – Zinhle reflects on the death of AKA

Many South Africans have not yet fully wrapped their heads around the death of one of South Africa’s leading rappers, Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes. The news of his death came as a shock to many as it was announced that the rapper was shot dead outside a restaurant in Durban on the 10th of February 2023. The artist died at the age of 35 and left behind many broken hearts which included his family, and loved ones along with the Megacy.

While his passing remains surreal, many of his family, friends, and fans took it upon themselves to continue his legacy and celebrate the late star as he would’ve turned 36 on the 28th of January. Upon his passing, many of his family and friends within the industry swore to continue his legacy and embraced both his passing and presence by highlighting lyrics from one of his famous songs, Baddest, which reads “Long live Super Mega live long.”

One of the most significant people in the rapper’s life was his 7-year-old daughter, Kairo who is mothered by the popular South African female DJ, Zinhle Jiyane. Taking to socials to reflect on how this tragic event has taken a toll on her daughter, Zinhle took to express, “Kairo had a tough week leading up to Kiernan’s birthday, as a mother, I want her to heal & celebrate her dad but it’s too soon. The past year has been a roller coaster, my God!!! Every day I hold my breath hoping she’s okay. I feel helpless cause I can’t help my child deal with the pain.”

She further gave gratitude to those who played a crucial part in her and Kairo’s life, stating, “@murdahbongz thank you for holding us close & protecting us. My prayer is that we never fail Kairo and that we always allow love & kindness to flow into her life so she never feels lost without Kiernan. I know that will take time but I trust God, it might not be now but God knows you’ve put pride aside for your family & I am grateful for you. Imagine if I was dealing with a child who lost her dad alone but instead, we have each other, my family the Jiyanes, the Mohosanas, the Forbes, @nadianakai & all my friends, thank you for sharing the load with @murdahbongz & I.”

She concluded by finally finding the courage to say, “Happy Heavenly Birthday Kiernan. Today feels as heavy as the day we lost him, God give us strength.”
