With the Matrics of 2023 excited to receive their results, the community of Ekurhuleni mourns the death of matriculant Declan Murphy, who died in an accident during the December holidays in Plettenberg Bay before he could receive his results.
Declan, who was a pupil at St. Benedict’s College in Bedfordview, Ekurhuleni, achieved five distinctions in English, Geography, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Life Orientation.
According to TimesLIVE, a local news publication, they described him as a great leader and someone who always helped his fellow peers with issues they had. The school also mentioned that his faith and religion were important to the young man, citing that his strong belief system was what carried him till his last days.
The school released a statement saying, “We are grieved by the loss of one of our top achievers over the Christmas holidays. We are heartbroken and attempting to commemorate this young kid, who was the school chaplain’s altar boy from years 4 to 7.”
The school also went on to mention some of his other achievements as a pupil there, adding that, “Declan’s achievements outside the classroom included colours for hockey, an award given to an individual for their achievement either in academic, cultural, or sport by the school.”
The school praised him for being a well-known orator and receiving the public speaker award of the year. Dylan also received the Silver Academic Dux, full marks in academics, the bilingualism award, and was the best performer in arithmetic, English, and IT.
