Mixed reactions over Mama Joy’s AFCON trip

South Africa’s favourite sports mama, Joy ‘Mama Joy’ Chauke received mixed reactions after she shared she was on her way to Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) to support Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

While many had no problem with Mama Joy’s trip to France for the Rugby World Cup and allegedly using taxpayers’ money, some are now raising eyebrows and shaking their heads for the latest trip abroad after the sports fanatic shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) of herself being filmed leaving home, suitcase in tow.

“On my way to AFCON. Bafana Bafana I am coming,” wrote Mama Joy of the video while also posting two more images of herself in the aeroplane.

Social media users took to the comment section to wish Mama Joy safe travels while others questioned who was funding the trip:

Travel safe Mama joy, and all the best to our boys

Enjoy Mama Joy! Your presence will definitely motivate the boys.

Not to be a party pooper but can we not give other people a chance?

If it’s your money, enjoy.

If it’s tax payers money, then start being considered to the young generation. Let someone else have that experience, how about a 19 year old who dreams of captaining Banyana 1 day.

Bafana Bafana is set to face Mali today, Namibia on Sunday, 21 January and Tunisia on Wednesday, 24 January.
