Siv Ngesi criticises ANC over Zuma’s ‘fire pool’

by Sergio Miller

Comedian Siv Ngesi has expressed great disgust at South African ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC).

This comes after ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula publically admitted that they lied to protect former president Jacob Zuma when asked about money used to build the facilities on his Nlkandla estate, in particular the swimming pool.

It is worth noting that in 2014, the former public protector, Thuli Madonsela, conducted an investigation into the upgrades made to the homestead of the former South African president.

In her findings, Madonsela concluded that Zuma had unduly benefitted from the upgrades, which included a swimming pool costing R3.9 million, purportedly intended to serve as a “fire pool” to aid firefighters. As a result, Madonsela recommended that Zuma repay a portion of the R246-million spent. This recommendation was supported by the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Meanwhile, in his address at an ANC function in Barberton, the secretary general explained how they were able to justify the use of the pool to protect Zuma.

“We went to Parliament and opened an ad hoc committee and said a swimming pool is a fire pool. The [then] police minister [Nathi Nhleko] was sweating, seeing that this was a lie, because it is difficult to explain lies. People have lost their careers because of that thing.”

These comments were not well received by the comedian.

In response to the statements made by Mbalula, Siv wrote:

“Own goal” – hinting that Mbalula accidently exposed the political party.

“Did this man just admit that they did all they could to defend Zuma? Even when they knew he was in the wrong? Did he just admit that they lied under oath to defend Zuma?” he asked.

The comedian, who is also well-known for using his voice to address inequality, then encouraged his followers to vote the ANC out with the upcoming elections around the corner.

This has raised a lot of suspicion as to how much more the ruling party has being lying about.
