Populace Market celebrates township lifestyle with retail space

Populace Market is a hybrid and eclectic mix of designer retail stalls, food vendors, a bar, a daily fresh goods market, a live entertainment stage and a wellness zone. In addition to the permanent vendors, there is a diverse weekend market.

It is a bridge between different markets and entertainment that impacts the township economy in a positive way.

The vision was brought to life by the couple Nwabisa Disemba Jama also known as CA MA GU (producer/DJ/Author) alongside her husband Zolani Jama (music executive, artist manager and event’s organiser).

CA MA GU who is the co-founder elaborates on the aim of the Populace Market, “The main aim is to create an economy in the township and a space for people to have a good time with good company and networks but also for creatives to showcase their talents as raw as possible.”

The township’s first ever market space was launched in Khayelitsha in December of 2023 where an entire block of retail space was dedicated to a two-day food and product market at Isibaya Lifestyle.

They offered a township feel with global infused food offerings from different continent. Traders such as Manga Sushi, Kubu African, Sha Sha Wama, The Mussle Monger, Argies Argentinian Grill, Hokey Poke, What The Fish, Krockette and San-Julian Mexican were called to sign up for stalls.

The operation is every Saturday and retailers start trading from 09h00 – 20h00. Food vendors serve delicious meals until 21h00 and the bars stay open until 23h00.

The market was received well by the Rockers (people who go to the market), so the team decided to take a break and is set to resume on the 27th of January.
