Former MTV base presenter Shelton Forbez reflects on his journey

by Sergio Miller

A career in the entertainment industry can become stressful at times, the need to stay relevant, and being the best of your craft is a demanding responsibility.

While many artists and media personalities are able to keep themselves afloat, there are some who find the journey extremely draining.

This is a road that former VUZU and MTV Base presenter Shelton Forbez is well familiar with, however, the talented 32-year-old now finds himself in a much better space.

Shelton recently celebrated four years of sobriety and shared how his changed lifestyle has left him feeling like a 16-year-old.

When it comes to his emotions, he has always been someone to wear his heart on his sleeve when speaking about his battle with depression.

In a recent Instagram post, he opened up about the journey that he travelled to get to where he is.

After being open to learning bad habits, such as drinking and smoking from a young age and making meaningless connections in the industry, the former presenter now realises that none of these things have been beneficial to his growth as an individual and took it upon himself to be the change he wished to see.

“Living a sober lifestyle: I started drinking and smoking at the age of 11/12, I blame no one as I’ve always been curious and that led to me clubbing from that age. I stopped drinking and smoking around four years ago because I realised that socially this works and you fit right in, it takes away all anxiety, it looks cool on TV and music videos but in reality my body and health suffered, I’m 32 today and I feel 16,” he wrote.

In his post with the caption, “How I’m breaking the entertainment industry stereotypes,” he shared that his vision is to now start “sharing honest work with no hidden agenda.”

“There is no industry standard, there are no gate keepers, my gifts were given to me by God and that’s how I serve and contribute to this world. The world of fame and popularity felt like school at some point (who’s the coolest) but never who is the most talented and that’s what I’d rather live by.

“My work ethic, my gift and sharing that as a human in a world with other humans ❤️ ❤️ ❤️.”

Despite all the chaos that occurred in his life, the one thing that kept him sane was his girlfriend Bianca Koyabe. The two have been together for more than 10 years and are more in love than ever.
