Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida has, for the second time, authored a powerful book for children. Following the release of her first children’s book ‘Shudu Finds her Magic’ which was a bestseller and published in six languages, her new book ‘I am Shudu, Finding My Voice, Knowing My Power’ tells the story of her growing up in Limpopo, always being ‘the new girl’ in school as she moves to different cities with her mother, and being bullied., Importantly, the book deals in a caring and practical way with the upsetting issue of bullying and inspires the child to embrace bravery, self-worth and the importance of friendships.

Published by Jacana Media, the book is beautifully illustrated by Chantelle and Burgen Thorne. Unlike the first book which targeted 4 to 8-year-olds, this wonderful book is aimed at 6 to 10-year-olds to help them build confidence and independent reading and transition from picture books to chapter books.

Says Shudu, “I am so thrilled to share my story in the form of this book with the world, especially young kids whom I am hoping will draw inspiration from my story. I had an idyllic childhood in my formative years, with loving grandparents and suddenly moving cities would change my world and expose me to bullying, prejudice and various kinds of discomforts which I believe are not just unique to me but a common scourge to younger people and this affects their mental health, and some end up not wanting to go to school. With this book, I want readers to understand the power of their voice and use it as a tool to shape the world around them.”

Shudufhadzo, popularly known as Shudu, is a celebrated public figure whose work as a mental health advocate is recognized internationally.

Shudu hopes that her book will spark conversations she wishes were had with her when she was young, and will help children worldwide who are being bullied and struggling with their mental health, to find their power and speak out.

The book is available at all good book stores from the 8th of November 2023.

Shudu will be travelling to stores around the country to meet children and sign their books.
