Oprah’s coming to town!

On 21 July, Oprah will make her appearance at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, for a conference hosted by the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. (OWLAG).

The conference, called ‘What Happened to You: Understanding the Impact of Trauma on Learning, Teaching and Psychological Functioning’ will be a day-long event and will feature renowned leaders in education, according to an article published by BusinessTech.

The conference will be split into sections led by trauma experts, who will unpack and share research on the effect of trauma that has gone unaddressed, as well as provide information about how to create informed responses to trauma. Oprah will share her personal experience with trauma in conversation with OWLAG Board Chairperson, Dr. Kate G. Windsor.

The conference also aims to bring awareness to the ‘Neurosequential Model’ a developmentally sensitive, neurobiology-informed approach to clinical problem solving across fields, including in learning environments.

Oprah will address key concepts from the book, What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing penned by Dr Bruce Perry and Oprah herself. In a post shared on Instagram, Oprah shares more about the book:
“Most of us have experienced various levels of trauma that have informed how we operate and interact in the world…”
“We hope that through these pages, we help people hold more empathy for themselves and others as we learn to shift from asking ‘What’s wrong with you?’ to ‘What happened to you?'”.

If you’re a teacher, counsellor or educator in SA and these concepts fascinate you, make sure to bag your ticket to Oprah’s talk before it’s too late. You will enjoy a catered lunch and receive a free copy of What Happened to You.

The OWLAG conference will take place on 21 July at the Gallagher Convention Centre from 8AM to 4PM.
