The life-changing benefits of good posture

For some people, the words “sit up straight!” said by their parents are etched in their minds. However, people still seem to slouch in their chairs. Although it is comfortable to do the latter, it is not beneficial for one’s health.

Orthopaedic specialists at Barrington explain that posture refers to how you position your body when sitting, standing, or lying down. One’s posture is the result of habits formed over the years.

“Many people may recognise poor posture in others without realising how their falls short. If you look around at co-workers at the office, you will likely find them hunched over at their desks,” notes the health publication mentioned above.

So, what is good posture?

According to Barrington, good posture is the proper alignment of your body when standing or sitting. Correctly positioning yourself sees you training to hold your body against gravity with the least amount of strain and tension on supportive structures like muscles and ligaments.

Proper posture also keeps bones and joints in an ideal alignment while also decreasing wear and tear on supportive structures.

Below are three benefits of good posture according to Barrington.

  1. Reduces back and neck pain: When your spine is properly aligned, it makes your body move easily, allowing it to support your weight strain. Having a poor posture can place stress on your tendons, muscles, and ligaments which can lead to pain in your neck and back.
  2. Improves muscle and joint function: Good posture also allows your muscles and other structures to function properly and helps you avoid abnormal wear and tear.
  3. Boosts your mood: When thought about, good posture can boost your mood too. Because your brain and body have a two-way connection, your mood can impact your posture while your posture affects your mood. For example, when you are happy, you tend to sit up straight, compared to when you are feeling sad, you are more likely to slouch.
