Things you shouldn’t do on your period

For many people who menstruate, periods can be a challenging time. From cramps and headaches to mood swings and fatigue, there are plenty of things to contend with. However, there are also some things you should avoid doing during your period to ensure that you stay comfortable and healthy.
Here are some of the things you shouldn’t do on your period by HealthShots:
1. Forget to change your pad or tampon
One of the most important things to remember during your period is to change your pad or tampon regularly. Leaving a pad or tampon in place for too long can lead to unpleasant odors, infections, and even Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but serious bacterial infection that can be life-threatening. Make sure to change your pad or tampon at least every 4-6 hours, or more frequently if necessary.
2. Engage in strenuous exercise
While exercise can be beneficial during your period, it’s essential to be mindful of your body’s limitations. Engaging in strenuous exercise, such as weightlifting or high-intensity interval training, can worsen cramps and make you feel fatigued. Instead, try low-impact exercises like yoga or swimming, which can help ease period symptoms.
3. Skip meals or eat unhealthy foods
During your period, your body needs extra energy to cope with the physical and emotional stress. Skipping meals or eating unhealthy foods can lead to low blood sugar levels, making you feel more tired and irritable. Instead, focus on eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Also, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
4. Use scented products
Many feminine hygiene products like pads, tampons, and wipes come with a fragrance. While they may seem like a good idea, these products can irritate your skin, leading to inflammation and infections. It’s best to stick to unscented products or natural alternatives like reusable menstrual cups.
5. Ignore unusual symptoms
If you notice unusual symptoms during your period, such as heavy bleeding, severe cramps, or unusual discharge, it’s crucial to see a doctor. These symptoms could be signs of an underlying health condition that requires treatment.
