When is it a right time to move on after a break-up?

Is there ever a right time, really! Realistically, moving on is based on each individual and how they feel.

Whether you feel strong enough emotionally and you feel at peace with yourself and had closure over your last relationship.

However, experts might have different opinions on the matter, Zencare shares a study that “most people start to feel better around three months post-breakup. One study, which evaluated 155 undergraduates who’d been through breakups in the last six months, found that 71 percent start to feel significantly better around the 11-week mark, or around three months.”

There are five things that are suggested towards the process of healing before moving on to a new relationship:

  • Give yourself at least three months to purge all the feelings, emotions and effort you have put in towards your partner. Allow yourself to heal, however, psychologist Dr Sarah Bran says, “I would actually caution a client from getting too attached to the notion that there is some sort of equation or ‘right’ amount of time to get over a break up.”
  • Break free, from what you think you should do or expected of you, practice what feels right for you.
  • Accept that what was once part of your life is no more,  according to Dr. Bren, “letting go of the expectations to which we tend to hold ourselves following a breakup – and giving ourselves permission to feel heartache and grief devoid of judgment and without rushing the transition to happy thought – can actually help us to feel better sooner.”
  • Self care should be your priority, take care of yourself and do little things that make you happy, make sure by the time you get to a new relationship you have owned your independence.
  • Don’t start a relationship for wrong reasons, for example, for your ex to see you with another person or do it to prove a point.

In essence, there could never be a right time but making sure that you do everything how you want to and not for anybody else, then you are on the right track.
