Why sunscreen is a must during summer

We’ve all heard how important it is to wear sunscreen for skin protection, but do you know why? Because our skin works to protect us from harmful ultraviolet radiation, we should use sunscreen to protect ourselves from these rays. Even on cloudy days, our skin is vulnerable to the sun’s rays, which can eventually lead to skin cancer, discoloration, and wrinkles. We have all seen our favourite skincare influencers emphasize the importance of wearing sunscreen.

The most important change you can make in your daily routine to protect your skin is to apply sunscreen every morning and throughout the day. If you notice any changes in your skin or new spots, you should also contact your local Dermatologist. Below, we discuss the significance of using sunscreen every day according to the Fargo Center for Dermatology and how you can protect your skin.

Reduce Inflammation

When our skin is exposed to UV rays it can cause painful redness and inflammation. This can be especially challenging for individuals with skin issues like psoriasis. Wearing sunscreen each day helps to prevent inflammation from harmful rays. If you are prone to redness and have sensitive skin, look for a sunscreen with gentle ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. You should also avoid spray-on sunscreens as these can contain harsh formulas, including alcohol that can dry out the skin. If you have questions regarding your skin issues or need help selecting a product, reach out to your local dermatologist for assistance.

Reduce your risk of skin cancer

Using sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, is one of the most effective ways to prevent skin cancer.  You can reduce your risk of developing this disease by applying SPF 30 or higher multiple times per day. You can use a higher SPF for even more protection. If you’ll be spending a lot of time outside or in the water, reapply your sunscreen every two hours.

Reduce premature aging

Sun exposure causes sunspots, discoloration, fine lines, and wrinkles, making it one of the most common causes of premature aging. Excessive sun exposure over time usually results in discolored and leathery skin. Wear sunscreen  daily to avoid these signs of aging and have healthy looking skin.

Protect all skin types and tones

Some people believe that if you have darker skin and don’t burn easily, you shouldn’t wear sunscreen. This is not correct! Even if you don’t get sunburned, your skin is still vulnerable to sun damage. Skin cancer is more common in people with fair skin, but it can also affect people with darker skin tones.
