Fundiswa Nkwanyana gives us insight into what to expect at the theatre for children.
Nowadays, it’s normal for children to spend hours glued to TV screens with limited interaction with the outside world. But, I believe there are other ways to keep your children entertained.
I recently fell in love with the People’s Theatre in Johannesburg, which offers productions to entertain and educate young audiences. It is the perfect place for children to see their favourite fairy tales and stories live on stage in a fun, educational and interactive way. The stage is artistically decorated with moving props while cast members are dressed to resemble characters from the storybooks. And when a character steps on stage, the children excitedly scream the name. During the show, some of the actors ask questions and encourage the children to sing and dance along with them. There are also dramatic sound and lighting effects that draw the kids into the imaginative world in an extraordinary way.
The People’s Theatre hosts at least four shows each year with each production running for about four to six weeks.
I highly recommend taking your kids to a children’s theatre near you for a memorable experience.
