The anticipation of a weekend away had me tap dancing with excitement. Upon arrival, this turned into breakdancing as my eyes welcomed the breathtaking views of rolling hills, rivers and dams at the Walkersons Hotel & Spa.

Ambiance

This five-star hotel has a charming and elegant country atmosphere. It is filled with welcoming terraces and scenic views that merge with the sky in a beautiful way. The hotel oozes a sense of calm while its decor is sophisticated with a rustic touch of nature from the natural stone walls. I loved the fact that there were plenty of perfectly placed benches and chairs throughout the hotel, inviting you to sit down, relax and enjoy the views.

Bedrooms

Walking into my luxury lakeside self-catering suite, I couldn’t wait to indulge in its comfort and elegance. The open-plan room had a well-stocked mini bar fridge, fireplace, private patio and my favourite – the outdoor shower. I felt safely nestled while I indulged in all the extravagances.

Dining

Every meal at the hotel’s in-house restaurant, The Flying Scotsman, took my taste buds on a culinary experience. They were plated so elegantly that I would often just stare at my food before indulging, down to the last bite! The picnic under a tree overlooking the dam and hills with a tasty spread of finger foods, cheese and fresh fruits has to be my highlight. I snuggled up with a blanket and watched mist slowly settling over the hills. I enjoyed the tranquil natural setting as well as a fine dining experience at Mrs Simpson, a restaurant located in Dullstroom’s main road.

Fun activities

Walks – There are plenty of walking and cycling trials along the rivers, dams and manicured lawns. The trails also have a spread of benches, just in case you need a moment to take in the views.

Spa – My body was taken to a peaceful place as the therapist worked at unknotting my tense joints and muscles during the full body massage.

Fly fishing – With the guidance of the hotel’s fly fishing expert, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I had a natural knack for it. Although I did not catch any fish, I had fun learning something new.

Wild About Whisky – This shop is located on Dullstroom’s main road and offers tutored tastings of whisky, gin, brandy, rum and tequila from all over the world. What a treat!

I have officially found my new happy place. But, don’t take my word for it; explore this luxury yourself by scheduling a visit here.
