I started the National Braai Day initiative 15 years ago. At the time, my intention was not to become a braai master, but rather to encourage all South Africans to become braai masters. The initiative was for people to share their heritage and unite around fires. From this point, my love and knowledge for braaing grew.
Being a braai master is easy. You just have to use wood for your braai, invite your friends over and unite around the fire. The beauty of it is that everyone can be a braai master. Also, using one of my braai cookbooks will achieve you that status a lot quicker.
My job as Jan Braai has opened me up to amazing opportunities. These include my television show Jan Braai vir Erfenis. I have also been fortunate enough to travel all over South Africa where I’ve met incredible people over the years. We have a wonderful country with so many diverse cultures, cities and towns.
