How a pet can help your child grow

Kids are full of wonder, curiosity and excitement. For your child to retain these qualities into adulthood, child psychologist, Masechaba Motanyane suggests kids need a pet to care for. Here are the benefits.

Mental benefits: Young children enjoy the sensory aspects of animals. They see the pretty bird, hear the cat’s meow, and touch the soft, fluffy dog. Toddlers can also learn the noises animals make.

Social and emotional benefits:
Pets are living creatures that need to be cared for – fed, washed and sheltered. By doing these things, kids start to form emotional bonds with pets, and make friends. A child will develop compassion and nurturing abilities by caring for and playing with a pet. This can also promote feelings of empathy as kids will see how animals react if they’re treated nicely.

Physical benefits: By walking or playing with a pet – depending on what it is – your kids will get exercise and be active. Pets can also be playful – cats or dogs can chase you around, jump up and down.

Pets your child might like Dog:
This is the most common pet for children of all ages and will help with developing strong bonds. The animalhuman relationship is particularly intense with dogs. Cat: Nothing is more comforting than a warm, fluffy body and a soft, calming purr. A cat is ideal for kids who are loving, but who won’t mind being ignored by a pet that’s often at a distance. [e]
