Catching up with Nicholas Nkuna, aka Nick Soul

The internationally acclaimed actor chats to us about his love for acting as well as upcoming album.

1. I’m an actor because I want to tell our inspirational stories.

I believe that there are many untold stories about black people.Throughout my career, I have worked with productions that tell our stories in a positive light. I want young people to see themselves in me when I am on screen. However, it saddens me that nowadays actors are being hired for their strong social media following, and not their acting skills.

2. I always strive to be a multifaceted actor and I don’t shy away from any roles.

My aim is to be an actor that excels in theatre and on small and big screens because I don’t want to limit myself. Over the years, I’ve acted in theatre productions such as The Lion King’s UK Tour, local soapies like Skeem Saam. I was also part of the movie Love by Chance. I enjoy the challenges that come with acting on different platforms.

3. Shooting the film Love by Chance in America was an eye-opening experience.

I was surprised that some Americans still don’t know that Africa is a continent, and they are shocked that South Africans can speak English properly. This baffled me; but I enjoyed enlightening them about who we are and informing them about how progressive South Africa is.

4. I’m also a budding musician.

I recently shot the music video for my latest single Diamond, and plan to release an album titled Therapy later this year. I write amazing Afro soul songs about love and heartbreak and I can’t wait for people to hear it. I’m so excited.
